The room that never quite warms up.

Window Replacement in Traverse City, MI

Old windows do not usually fail all at once. They get harder to open, they frost on the inside, and the room they are in stops getting used. For window replacement, we measure what you have, order to those exact sizes, and handle the window installation with our own crew.

What drives the price

What determines the cost of replacement windows in Traverse City?

Three things set the number on a replacement window job in Northern Michigan: how many openings you are replacing, which frame and glass package you choose, and what the existing openings need before a new window goes in. We do not publish prices, because a price without your openings in front of us is a guess dressed up as a number.

  1. 01 How many openingsTen windows is not ten times one window. Mobilization, disposal and a single trip get spread across the job.
  2. 02 Which product tierFrame material and glass package are where the real spread lives. This is the lever you actually control.
  3. 03 What the install involvesA straight swap into a sound opening is one number. Rotted sills, odd sizes and a second storey are another.

Window questions homeowners ask

Do you use subcontractors to install windows?

No. Midwest Exteriors installs with its own crew, not a subcontractor pool assembled the week of your install. The same team is with you from the first call to the final walkthrough, and the estimator who measured has already told the crew what they are walking into.

What warranty comes with your window replacement?

You get the manufacturer's warranty on the windows, plus our lifetime warranty on the installation. The installation warranty transfers to the next owner if you sell the house.

Where do you replace windows?

We are based in Williamsburg, just east of Traverse City, and we replace windows for homes within about two hours of there: 65 towns, including Traverse City, Gaylord, Cadillac, Grayling, Kalkaska, Manistee, Charlevoix, Houghton Lake, Boyne City and Roscommon.

What is the difference between a double-hung and a casement window?

A double-hung has two sashes that slide, and both tilt inward so you can clean second-storey glass from inside the room. A casement swings out on a hinge and pulls shut with a crank, which draws the sash into the frame and compresses the weather seal all the way around. That is the tightest seal of anything that opens. Double-hung suits most Northern Michigan homes; casement suits a kitchen sink you have to reach across, or a wall where you want the most airflow.

Do I have to replace the trim and siding when I replace a window?

Usually no. We measure the existing opening and order the replacement to it, so on most homes built before the 1990s the trim, the drywall and the siding are left alone. Where a sill or frame has rotted, that has to be dealt with first. We tell you which situation you have before you order, not after.

What is the difference between a bay and a bow window?

A bay projects from the wall in angled sections; a bow curves through several equal ones. Both push the window past the plane of the house and add floor area with a sill deep enough to use. Both are structural work as well as window work. The projection needs support underneath and flashing above, so it gets measured differently from a straight replacement.

What determines the cost of replacement windows?

Three things: how many openings you are replacing, which frame and glass package you choose, and what the existing openings need before a new window goes in. We do not publish prices, because a price without your openings in front of us is a guess dressed up as a number. A free estimate gets you a written, itemised figure that is still good after you have slept on it.

Which window is best for a Michigan winter?

The seal matters more than the style. A casement or awning compresses its weather seal as the crank closes, so it seals tighter than anything that slides. A fixed picture window has no operating hardware at all, so there is nothing to wear out and nowhere for air to move. Where a room needs both the view and the air, we flank a picture window with casements or put an awning below it.

Communication was sketchy at first but Travis Kramer certainly made up for it. I would recommend anyone to work with him as well as the crew, they all did an awesome job. I love my house and so do the neighbors!
