A bay projects from the wall in angled sections; a bow curves through several equal ones. Both do the same job: they push the window past the plane of the house and give the room depth it did not have.
This is structural work as much as window work. The projection needs support underneath and flashing above, which is why it gets measured differently than a straight replacement.
